Steering Rods & Joints: Engineering for Safety

A failed driveline means a tow; a failed steering joint means an accident. Discover how MMW manufactures zero-play steering column assemblies for commercial trucks.

While massive propeller shafts get the glory of transmitting thousands of pounds of engine torque, there is a much smaller, quieter shaft assembly operating in the cabin of every commercial truck and transit bus: the Steering Column Rod Assembly.

The steering column connects the steering wheel to the steering gearbox. Unlike a driveshaft where failure results in a loss of momentum, a failure in the steering assembly results in a total loss of vehicle control. For this reason, MMW Auto Industries treats steering components with a high level of safety testing and precision engineering.

The "Zero Play" Requirement

When a driver turns the steering wheel of a fully-loaded Ashok Leyland truck moving at highway speeds, they expect an immediate response. If the steering joint cross is manufactured with poor tolerances, a gap is created between the needle bearings and the trunnion.

This microscopic gap translates into "steering play"—meaning the driver has to turn the wheel several degrees before the truck actually begins to turn. This creates a highly dangerous, "floating" sensation on the highway.

MMW prevents this by utilizing multi-axis European CNC systems to machine our steering yokes and joint crosses. The tolerances are kept razor-thin, guaranteeing absolute zero-play and instantaneous steering response.

Glide Coat Finishing

Modern commercial steering columns often telescope to adjust to the driver’s height or to absorb impact during an accident. To ensure this telescopic sliding action does not bind, MMW applies an advanced Glide Coat finish to our steering yokes and internal splines. This low-friction, high-durability polymer coating prevents galling, resists corrosion, and ensures the steering column articulates smoothly for the entire lifespan of the vehicle.
