For heavy commercial vehicles and industrial machinery, the driveline is the backbone of operation. Neglecting basic drive shaft maintenance doesn't just result in a broken part—it can tear apart transmissions, differential housings, and cause massive fleet downtime.
1. The Importance of Proper U-Joint Lubrication
Universal joints (UJ Crosses) bear the brunt of torque transfer while articulating. Friction is their biggest enemy. If you hear a squeaking or clicking sound when accelerating or shifting into reverse, your needle bearings are likely running dry.
- Greasing Frequency: For heavy-duty commercial trucks, U-joints should be greased every 10,000 to 15,000 miles, or at every oil change. For agricultural PTO shafts used in dirt and mud, grease them daily.
- Purging the Old Grease: When pumping new grease into the zerk fitting, ensure you pump until clean grease purges from all four seals of the cross. If one seal doesn't purge, the bearing channel is clogged and will eventually fail.
Time to Replace Your U-Joints?
MMW manufactures incredibly durable, 20MnCr05 alloy steel UJ Crosses designed to outlast standard aftermarket parts.

The sleeve yoke slides back and forth on the splined shaft to account for suspension travel. If the splines lack lubrication (or if the dust cap fails and lets grit inside), the splines will bind.
A binding slip yoke creates a "clunking" or "thumping" feeling when the vehicle comes to a stop or takes off. This binding forces the entire weight of the suspension travel directly into the transmission output shaft, which can shatter the transfer case.
3. Vibration: The Ultimate Warning Sign
If the vehicle shakes specifically at certain highway speeds, your propeller shaft is likely out of balance. This could be due to a lost balancing weight, a dent in the shaft tube from road debris, or failing center bearings. Never ignore driveline vibration. It will rapidly destroy pinion seals and bearings.
At MMW Auto Industries, we dynamically balance 100% of our propeller shafts on computerized European machinery to ensure flawless, vibration-free operation out of the box.
